This semester, Marianne McGoron has taken over the position of student activities coordinator.
This is her third year at Ottawa. She spent the first two as a graduate assistant in the athletic department.
McGoron is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and received her bachelor’s in sports management with a minor in Spanish from Wilmington College.
She also played basketball at Wilmington, which is where she developed the interest in sports management that brought her to Ottawa.
She said when she was looking for jobs after college, Ottawa just stuck out. Being from a big city she never imagined herself in a place like this, at such a small school.
“I really like it here,” Marianne said, “I didn’t know that I was going to fall in love with Ottawa as much as I have. I think it’s just interesting how you can fall in love with a place because of the people.”
Now, as student activities coordinator, McGoron is in charge of all student organizations and serves as an advisor for CAB and student senate. She is also responsible for bringing events and entertainment to campus.
Student body president Eric Wilson said McGoron is an asset to the university because of her work ethic and age.
“She always wants things to be done right and will do her best when she has the opportunity to,” Wilson said. “She is also still young so she can give accurate opinions on events and other things involving student affairs.”
In her free time McGoron enjoys spending time with the graduate assistants she lives with. They frequently go to Pizza Time and enjoy going up to Lawrence to hang out.
So far, Marianne has been enjoying her job in student affairs and Ottawa University as a whole.
“Student affairs is really fun,” Marianne said, “We get the really fun jobs and I get to interact with students directly. I also really like my co-workers, they are what makes it so great to work here.”
