Through the first couple of months of school, the tasks of the student senate continue to grow.
Being known as the ‘voice of the student body,’ one of the senate’s jobs is to keep everyone updated on their progress.
At the start of the year, Vice President Abby New said the senate had planned on tackling budgets as their first order of business.
“We have been working through budgets for student organizations and preparing for homecoming,” New said.
“So far the first few meetings have been focused on getting all the student organization budgets passed or denied,” President Eric Wilson said. “We’ve had a few meetings outside regularly scheduled senate meetings for different clubs to present to the senate.”
With so many student organizations on campus, it is a tough task to allocate the money fairly. The main priority for the senate is to make sure the money is going for the betterment of the university and the students.
“It’s about trying to judge and trying to decide where the money should go,” Wilson said. “And making sure the money is in fact going to the students and not some third party.”
Having so much going on all over campus, getting everyone to cooperate to continue moving forward would seem almost impossible, but New thinks the senate has made progress.
“Being a senator my freshman and sophomore years, I believe we have made significant progress compared to previous years,” she said. “Our only difficulty was school starting later this year. It was difficult to get things up and going.”
Wilson, being new to the senate, is reaching towards a faster finish.
“I still feel like we’re not firing on all cylinders at this point,” he said. “The budget issue is the most important right now. Some members with experience can easily say how it should be done but some of us haven’t done this before.”
