School Spirit

Are you a true OU fan? Are you proud to be an Ottawa Brave? What could you do to make school spirit better?

This year is filled with new opportunities and changes. It could be the year that brings the school culture to life. Not everyone is part of the spirit team, but we can all support each other. School spirit is not only about sports, it also affects student life. Stay involved and committed to OU. Try something new this year! Come to a Chapel service or bible study. There are so many things you could do to show your school spirit.

As for sports, football games are always exciting, especially when the crowd is truly engaged. This year we have a student section located on the far side of the black bleachers next to the band. Once again this is the start to something new. We are the “Loud Crowd.”

Many students don’t have much to say about school spirit. Many feel like it doesn’t matter. Well I’m here to tell you it does. When a team is down during a game and all hope is lost, school spirit matters. As a team, they can push and strive their best effort together. But what’s even better is having your friends, roommates or even your significant other cheering you on every step of the way. When it feels like there is no hope for a win, what matters most is that we all have each other’s back.

When you have spirit the outcome of everything improves. Not only does it reflect on athletes, but it also helps us grow closer as a school. As a member of the Spirit Squad, I know it is my job to cheer and stay positive throughout every single game. But anyone out there can do the same. It doesn’t mean you have to have pom-poms and a skirt on. What really matters is your hope.

School spirit is very important not only for Ottawa but for every university. Let’s take the next step to grow as a school and influence each other. Think about what you could do to improve your school spirit and put it into action. We can all do it. We have the spirit. Go Braves!
