The Middle of Somewhere
Ottawa, Kansas is a very unique place. The community is full of a homogenous mixture of young and old people. The character of the town is rich with history but still keeps up with the times. Main Street is filled with little mom and pop shops that surround the town with a sense of collectiveness.
“This is our town,” people say and it couldn’t be more true. The people of the community here in Ottawa, Kan. make this place their own. Outside forces seem to hit and bead off like rain on a windshield.
In addition to the fantastic people in this town there are a great variety of students that attend Ottawa University.
As the town ceases to change like a stubborn rock breaking thousands of waves the university finds a way to keep evolving. Whether it is from new students, new buildings or new policies, the school is always changing.
With our grand OU accumulating students as far away as Venezuela and Serbia the vast array of views and ideas are astounding. The convergence of these people here in Ottawa provides for a unique make up.
It isn’t uncommon to hear grumblings and groans about our tiny town and its’ lack of luster at a surface level.
With many students coming from large urban communities it is easy to see how they might see this place as the end of Earth. It very well could be if it weren’t for our student body coming together as one and making the most of it.
It is hard to see how this little town could be anything but a little town but in light of our own existence as young, creative people, Ottawa will always be in the middle of somewhere.
