On March 2-4, Hungry for Change will be helping to host the Hunger Summit in Kansas City, Kan. President of Hungry for Change Victoria Gordon said she went to the Hunger Summit in Honduras last year with some other students and faculty adviser Sandra Marlatte.
“We learned about what we can do collectively to help (with) the problem of hunger,” said Gordon, a junior. “I learned that not one thing can solve the problem.”
Gordon said while in Honduras she attended workshops, listened to speakers who are active in the fight against hunger and spoke with students from other universities.
“I also learned that we’re all working hard to end hunger and until it ends, no one is going to give up and we can all help each other,” Gordon said.
Senior officer Andrew McCluney said going to Honduras was an eye-opening experience.
“The biggest thing I learned was that educating people is just as important as feeding them,” McCluney said. “It’s not just about giving them one meal. Education will last longer.”
Hungry for Change will be helping to host the Hunger Summit by helping people find out where to go and directing people around the area. Hungry for Change will also be putting on a panel.
“We’ll be talking about how Hungry for Change came to be and how smaller schools can help fight hunger,” McCluney said.
The students themselves will also be attending some workshops and panels. Marlatte hopes the students will get some specific information about fighting hunger.
“They’ll be able to hear from different sources about how widespread the issue of hunger is and hopefully they’ll become more motivated to do something about it,” Marlatte said.
Gordon thinks helping with the Hunger Summit will highlight Ottawa University.
“I think this will show that we’re serious and we’re working hard, and hopefully we’ll get more members and be able to do things abroad,” Gordon said.
Marlatte said multiple universities will be working together to host the Hunger Summit.
“Kansas has been one of the most active states as far as working on the issue of hunger and what has already gone on here,” Marlatte said. “In the past, the Hunger Summit has been on one campus but because there are multiple campuses contributing, it’s been a collaboration.”
