The Ottawa University Braves extended their winning streak defeating McPherson College 38-14, the team’s fourth victory in a row.
With this win the Braves reached first place in the KCAC, tied with Kansas Wesleyan University and Tabor College.
The Braves’ defense had a good night, leading the McPherson Bulldogs to a scoreless first half.
The Braves’ offense did its job, on a 30-yard touchdown run by freshman Dexter Hayes with less than five minutes left in the first quarter. Sophomore Jeff Stamp converted the extra point.
The Braves increased their lead with a two-yard carry by senior quarterback Shane Gimzo at the beginning of the second quarter.
On the next drive, senior defensive lineman Pierce Hutchens stripped the ball from a McPherson running back, in which senior Donald Anderson scooped up, returning it for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs went for it on a fourth and two, but the pass was incomplete. A turning point in the game.
In the third quarter, sophomore Mason Semmel’s intercepted a Jake Snodgrass pass, returning the ball deep in Bulldog territory, on their six yard line.
A couple plays later, Shane Gimzo found sophomore Kellan Hernandez wide open in the endzone, giving OU a 28-0 lead.
The Braves’ defense held McPherson scoreless until the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Leading 31-0 now a Stamp field goal, Snodgrass connected with Paul Rotering on an 18-yard touchdown pass, trimming the OU lead to 24.
Another interception, this time by Donald Anderson, gave the ball back to the Braves.
Two plays later Shane Gimzo connected with receiver Jon Hilliger for a 22-yard touchdown pass. After the extra point, OU led 38-7, and didn’t look back.
The Bulldogs would score again on a six-yard touchdown pass, but it wouldn’t be enough to bring them back, ending the game 38-14.
