Social media games have begun to turn into something of a phenomenon over the last couple of years.
I don’t know what happened, but all of a sudden it was the thing to get on Facebook and pretend to be a farmer on a pretend farm, with pretend animals.
If you weren’t farming, you might have been having fake wars with your friends and their mafias.
Now, if you weren’t playing Farmville or Mafia Wars, you might have been playing something else.
Or, you were like me and didn’t play any of these weird games at all.
I can see that on one hand those social media games give you an opportunity to interact more with your friends, or just provide a break from the usual Facebook creeping. On the other hand, I don’t know how some people even have time to take those games seriously.
So, I was talking to a friend the other week, and he suggested that I try this new game on the book called ESPNU College Town.
I’m a guy that sticks to the traditional Play Station/X Box games when it comes to playing sports games.
The selling point to this was that it gave you more control over a school, and multiple sports teams. Also my roommate and a few of my other friends were playing it, so I figured I might as well try this once while I’m in college.
When I first got on, the thing I didn’t really like was how slow the connection was. I don’t know if it was my computer, or Facebook or the Internet, but it was hard to move across my virtual campus.
The tutorial started, and this cartoon cheerleader helped show me how to do the things I needed to make my school successful.
It was decent. I wasn’t too excited. You can get money for your school by building academic buildings, building dorms and housing complexes and hosting sporting events, among other things.
Like in life, the more money you bring in, the nicer things you can get, and there are all kinds of extra venues like hotdog stands and the like, that will make an individual’s campus more unique.
You can also challenge your peers to games using athletes that you recruit. I’ve always been a guy that loves to develop talent on sports games, so being able to recruit, or “buy” certain players to make your teams better.
Right now my campus is only at level four, and there are currently 14 students there, but my eyes have been opened to a game that is actually fun to play.
It definitely started out somewhat uninteresting, but the more I played, the more I began to get into it and enjoy it.
I wouldn’t say all of the games are the same, but for people who love sports and college, ESPNU College Town is a pleasant change-up to farming animals.
