Freshmen Joella Wolnik, Ray Thomas and Shelby Winfrey just like to jam together.
The trio entered the talent show, started by sophomore Keith Niemeyer, as a way to show students what they’ve written.
Wolnik, Winfrey and Thomas won the talent show on Oct. 25 with their song “Wooden Box.” This song was started by Winfrey several years ago but wasn’t finished until she was at OU.
“We’re all friends and we just finished it,” Winfrey said. “They knew exactly what to write.”
Winfrey said the original song is about a guy who has a drug problem and the singer is saying he doesn’t have to live the way he does.
Wolnik thought the talent show was the perfect opportunity to have others listen to the song.
“We thought it would be fun to show our song to people,” Wolnik said. “I liked the enthusiasm.”
Thomas also felt proud of what the group had accomplished.
“I like that a lot of people like the song we wrote,” he said. “God was by our side. I like that the event was judged and everyone did a great job.”
Although acts were encouraged to sign up ahead of time for the show, many acts spontaneously performed together.
“I liked how people just got inspired to get on stage,” Winfrey said.
Freshman Michael Harris played the saxophone during the show and said he was inspired by the other talent.
“It was really interesting to see people’s different talents,” Harris said. “I think (the talent show) should be once a semester – but still made to be a special event.”
Wolnik, Thomas and Winfrey agree that another talent show would be a positive event for the campus.
