OU student suffers concussion, lacerations from fight

Baker University senior Colton Miller has been charged with misdemeanor battery for an apparent assault on Ottawa University junior Jame Moran.

Moran said he was at a party Oct. 3 when a fight broke out. He said he stepped in to break up the fight, when Miller hit him.

In an article in The Baker Orange, Baker University’s student newspaper, last week, Miller said Moran “slammed him on his head,” where he then felt he had to defend himself by hitting Moran several times.

Moran said he saw the situation differently.

“I wouldn’t have acted toward him unless he would have hit me first,” Moran, a member of the OU football team, said.

Moran said he lost consciousness, suffered a concussion, had multiple lacerations inside his mouth and had bruising to his face.

OU Provost Dennis Tyner said the schools’ deans and presidents had been in communication, but he had not been contacted by anyone from Baker.

A court hearing for Miller, a member of Baker football team, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at Baldwin City Municipal Court.

Moran said he felt Miller’s actions were uncalled for and some type of action should be taken.

“His actions were stupid and reckless, and they shouldn’t go unpunished,” he said.

OU Dean of Students Tom Taldo could not be reached for comment on the incident.
