Black Student Union is under the leadership of a new President, has new faces, and a new change that lead to a dance full of sweets and fun from 9-11 p.m. October
Black Student Union hosted their first welcome dance on campus called “The Sweet Life of College,” which was open to all OU students, faculty, staff and the community. The dance was full of sweet refreshments from cupcakes, cookies, donuts, to rice crisper treats. The dance included a variety of contests with prizes.
Sophomore Francesca Carter said the dance was great success.
“I thought all the refreshments and décor went well with the theme,” she said. “As treasurer of BSU I think we did a great job at promoting the dance and I was glad to see so many people show up.”
BSU Chairperson Chanel Watkins said she felt the event was organized well and and went over well.
“When certain songs were played, everyone joined together on the dance floor, having so much fun,” she said.
BSU president Ceviona Taylor has big plans for the organization. She has already been implementing major steps toward making sure the organization is accomplishing their mission, which is to raise awareness of the African-American culture, support African-American students and encourage interaction between those students and other diverse groups on campus.
“The purpose of the dance was to help invite first year students to the OU community while encouraging current students to come out and have a great social time interacting with friends and new people … the dance was a huge success for our first event,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the BSU is prepared to bring together the entire student body through well planned activities and events welcomed to all students.
“I encourage all students looking for an organization that supports and welcomes all groups of people to come join us and be a part of a great family,” she said.
