Surge, the drama arm of campus ministries, is trying for a new start this year.
Senior Brian Hutton said Surge performs at events around campus and travels to perform for Sunday services and youth lock-ins. But Hutton wants to spread a different message than just being a drama group.
“While drama is a big part of our ministry, we rely on relationships and sharing the Gospel through our interactions with youth groups and churches,” he said. “Surge is definitely more than drama.”
Senior Rachel Zamaitis agrees with Hutton and adds that Surge is also a great learning experience.
“As a group we grow spiritually together, we work together, and we play together,” she said.
Something new the club is doing this year is community service work. Hutton said Surge has always taken part in community service but they will be focusing on it more in their upcoming events.
This year’s theme for Surge is “Live Out Loud.” Hutton said this goes with Surge’s title.
“Why not shout it out through our actions and interactions with others?” he said. “God showed us His love through the cross and His life–why shouldn’t we share that love at the top of our lungs?”
When asked why one might be attracted to this club, Junior Courtney Mabe described her experience the first year of becoming a member.
“They were just so on fire for God. It was contagious and it drew me in like a bug to a flame,” she said. “I want
ed to do as much as I could for this group that supported that feeling inside of me that wants to worship and praise God with all I am.”
Mabe said she encourages anyone who is excited about Surge to spread the word of God to join in on their mission.
Surge’s retreat weekend will take place the second weekend in September. Their first main event takes place in late October.
