Athletic and academic balance important

Diversity in activities is important to a college campus.

The campus has experienced just that this year with an influx of students who aren’t athletes.

A move in the right direction, this can help the overall attitude of the campus.

Even though OU excels on the field and on the court, we are preparing to excel in other areas, mainly in the music department. With a whole new direction, OU is growing and expanding to become a destination for music and arts students.

Athletics are important, but so are other kinds of endeavors that students can test their skill and drive with.

Being able to explore all our options in college is important.

Those students could become future leaders, starting clubs on campus to help further diversify our student body.

There are many different interests and hobbies that can be good supplements to the skills and critical thinking that we are learning here. Clubs related to those interests will help students develop the things they love into valuable supplementary skills that will help them in their future careers. Again, the existence of strong clubs in diverse interests will result in more students with separate interests wanting to come to OU. The end result can only be good if OU students, faculty and staff not only show up for the games to cheer on the Braves and Lady Braves. They should also come to the theater productions, music concerts and other student sponsored activities. If they get just as excited when forensics wins a tournament as when the football team does, this will show the equal importance of athletics and academics. It is important to support each other as a small campus, as a community and as a team – no matter what kind of team you’re a part of.
