At the end of my first year in college, there are a ton of things to look back on.
I was able to be a part of a really good football team, met a lot of new friends and experienced life on my own for the first time. It’s really exciting to go to a school that you enjoy.
Becoming an editor for the Campus’ staff was something that I wouldn’t have foreseen coming into this year.
Only being a part of a newspaper staff one year before, I did not know what to expect out of working on a college paper.
As a staff writer the first semester, the struggles I had with the frequency of deadlines and contacting people were very tough. The thing about OU though, is that the people here give us students any opportunities we can to succeed.
It’s crazy what we can do if we really strive for something.
The editors had patience with me and I continued to work on my problems, which led to me being able to step in as the sports editor this semester. I still have issues to work with, but moving forward, I think the sky is the limit. You have got to love some good sports talk, and that is one thing that has to get better here in time.
One thing we would like to do more is connect with the students better. Feel free to check out the campus online, give us feedback, however good or bad it is. After all, we can’t help the students as well as we want if the students don’t let us know what they think.
Our newspaper works to inform the students of information that they need to know, and we received a gold medal for doing that in the Kansas Association of Collegiate Press Awards. The problem is, gold comes up second to earning All-Kansas, which Baker University made claim of. If losing’s bad, then losing to a rival school hurts that much more.
Moving into 2011, our staff is excited to improve after making a big step this year. Look for this newspaper to keep doing what it’s been doing, and hopefully much more.
