A grade point average does not determine what kind of leader someone is.
It does, however, show what kind of effort a student puts into their studies. As a representative of the university, there should be no problem maintaining a high GPA.
It shows that the person who represents us as students also shows self-accountability and represents oneself well.
But how does one show self-accountability when there are so many different types of people on campus?
For example, some people maintain a high GPA by putting academics above everything else. They may not especially care about problems on campus, school spirit, or just about anything else as long as they graduate with a high enough GPA.
There are also students who try to get by with what grades their coaches tell them they must have to be eligible for their athletic sport. They may not care so much about going to class each day of the week. As long as they maintain a C-average, they’re good to go.
Then there are the students who have to work full time on top of a full schedule. They may not have a lot of time for homework, and those students may just be ‘getting by’ as well.
Whichever type of student you choose to be, there should be some sort of qualification when one decides to run for a leadership role on campus. A higher standard.
You choose how to lead your college life, and if being a representative of this campus is what you so desire, you should do it for the right reasons. You should do it because it will help you academically.
However, there is something to be said for those who do try their best and work their hardest and can only maintain that C-average. Kudos to you for that, and for balancing your busy schedule.
We know in college grades aren’t always the priority. Sometimes even on staff, our grades aren’t the priority.
There has to be a standard, but it doesn’t have to be purely based on grades.
But when effort and priorities both fail, it’s time to step back and look at the bigger picture.
We want to be represented by those around us who are successful. And if that’s maintaining that C-average and working hard, so be it.
