Media specialist, Noll finds Ottawa campus

Annie Noll said Ottawa University’s goals are her goals, too.

Noll, who was hired on as OU’s social media specialist, hopes to give perspective students indirect marketing through social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

“I have goals of putting up engaging content,” Noll said. “I want people to talk back to us.”

Gaining experience from internships at Barkley and HNTB, Noll spent most of her time working with social media for the jobs

“It’s something I think I was meant to do,” Noll said. “I had hoped to do this with marketing even when it didn’t exist.”

Noll stumbled upon social media in her second to last semester at KSU. Asked to write a paper about blogging, she said she had to ask what a blog was.

“This opened up a whole new world for me,” Noll said.

Believing that Facebook is the center of social media at OU, she created a Facebook team to help her get word out to more perspective students. Noll is expecting them to create reoccurring video scenes covering student life, academics and activities.

Freshman Sam Warshawsky, is a member of that team and said that word of mouth will get more high schoolers to look at OU’s page.

“Everybody and their dog has Facebook,” Warshawsky said. “We’ll be able to reach out to other students, and it’s cost effective.”

With expanding the university’s Facebook, Noll and her team think that many high-schoolers will want to talk via Facebook as is a less formal way for them to contact the university and its representatives.

Sophomore Nino Straub said that the group and social media for the university will work well because it’s a big part in kids’ lives.

“We’re trying to get with Vision 20/20 to bring in more kids and let them know what Ottawa is about without contacting them,” Straub said.

Warshawsky agreed saying that young kids want that option.

“We’ll get more fans to check it out through word of mouth,” Warshawsky said. “It’s real user friendly.”

Through her group, Noll said she is just creating a huge experiment.

“It’s a fun perspective,” Noll said. “I’d encourage everyone to become a fan. The bigger our base, the more reach we have.”
