Experience, internships can help with major hunt

There are a variety of majors a student can choose from by attending Ottawa University.

But when a person follows their passion, money might not be a thought right away.’ By choosing a major, students are determining how much money they will make after college.

‘I plan to use my teaching degree as a backup job once I graduate from school,’ Brandon Nichols, sophomore education major, said.’ ‘I will become a secondary math teacher and be looking for jobs in certain Saint Louis areas.’

Experience in the classroom and internships can help a student decide what direction to take their major in.’ This could determine income as well.

‘I had to teach at Fairview Heights in Fairview Heights, Kansas for one of my teaching classes for becoming a math teacher to see how I would conduct my class, Nichols said.

Sophomore Chanel Watkins is an IT major who’s going to go into troubleshooting when she graduates.’ Watkins wants to go into a company such as Charter Communications and tell them what’s wrong with their computers.

‘I want to fix computers by taking them apart, making programs, networks, web designs, hardware and software,’ Watkins said.

By attending Ottawa University and majoring in information technology, internships are available for desired fields of study.

Business majors should plan on taking trips to foreign countries to see how to operate their businesses. It’s optional for a business major to go on such trips because it’s at their own expense.

‘I haven’t been on any of the business trips but I do plan to go one day. I also plan to search for a job in a good and stable business company so the economy doesn’t affect me as much if it’s still in the same condition it’s in now,’ Stephon Cotton, junior business administration major, said.

But no matter the major students decide on, reseach will help in making the right decision financially and personally.
