ANNOUNCEMENT: H1N1 Update

We have had our first medically diagnosed case of the H1N1 virus. Based upon our recommendations, the student is self-isolating off campus while recovering from the flu in an effort to minimize the spread of the germ. Let me remind you that anyone diagnosed with the H1N1 flu should immediately isolate themselves from the University population. Residential students should communicate the information to their RAs and/or RDs and commuter students should provide the information to the Dean of Student Affairs Office (x5519) so that the University can provide further assistance. Employees should communicate their situation to their direct supervisor. All infected persons should remain isolated and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends staying away from others for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone (without the use of medication).

There are several precautionary actions suggested by the CDC that can prevent the spread of germs that can cause the flu, and it is strongly recommended that you follow them to protect yourself from getting sick. These include:

1) wash your hands often with soap and water;

2) use alcohol-based hand sanitizers;

3) avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose; and

4) avoid close contact with sick people.

Several students have already visited with the school nurse today because they were concerned about symptoms that they have been experiencing recently. Please keep in mind that H1N1 flu symptoms include :

1) fever

2) headache

3) chills

4) extreme tiredness

5) sore throat

6) muscle aches

7) runny or stuffy nose, and

8) dry cough.

Should you be suffering from flu-like symptoms, you are encouraged to stop by the Health Clinic in the Mowbray Union and visit with our school nurse or seek attention from other medical professionals.
